Are Salespeople Irrelevant?

Posted by Julie | May 31st, 2010

Fascinating article in New York Times about the New Touch Face of Vending Machines.

No longer the domain of candy bars and potato chips, vending machines are gaining popularity around the world as purveyor’s of higher ticket items like beauty products and small electronics from Apple.

The machines themselves have also gone hi-tech with touch pad screens that blunt vending machine rage through sensors that ensure that a customer’s credit card is not charged unless the chosen item has dropped.

They even have eye scans that can tell by looking at skin and wrinkles if customers are old enough to buy tobacco.

The economics of these new “automated retail stores” are quite compelling. No overhead, ability to quickly change out merchandise, and even to relocate the machine (for example, to another part of the airport) after analysis of foot traffic.

Sound like the perfect retail solution. So what’s missing?

In a word…People.

Which Brands Say “I Love You”?

Posted by Julie | February 9th, 2010

There are only 5 days left to Valentine’s Day, have you found that special gift to show how much you care?

I’ve got a few ideas, and I’m hoping the BrandTwist readers can help me build on them.

Chocolate is always a good standby.  But I say if you are going to give such  a classic gift, do it with a twist. That’s why I love Vosges Chocolates.  The packaging alone is an aphrodisiac. And the flavor combinations are so inspired. The bacon and chocolate combo sounds bizarre, but trust me it’s fabulous.

A little Google searching under “Unique Valentine’s Day Gifts” came up with this interesting site. It’s called FindGift.com. You  input information about who the gift is for and it serves up a list of suggestions.

In my case, I put in information about my husband and it suggested these interesting experiences including a chance to Test Drive his Favorite Race Car, a 007 James Bond Camp, a Harley Davidson Motorcycle Adventure, and Zookeeper For the Day.

For those of you feeling a bit more bah humbug (or bah lovebug) about the holiday, there are actually Anti-Valentine’s Day gifts.

Spice Things Up with Video

Posted by Julie | February 2nd, 2010

Video is not just for big brands on the Superbowl.

Even so-called “mundane” communciation can be spiced up with a little clever (and inexpensive) video play.

Here’s a great case in point. It’s a video from Image Premiums  a company that sells corporate premiums -products such as USB disks, t-shirts, water bottles, etc.

It’s worth a quick watch.

iPad: Genius or Hype?

Posted by Julie | January 28th, 2010

Unless you are living under a rock, you have no doubt seen Apple’s iPad launched yesterday.

I am in awe of the design and the user interface.  But as I fight off falling head over heels under the powerful Apple spell…I do have a few questions.

Do You Get Your Best Ideas in the Shower?

Posted by Julie | January 13th, 2010

A while back a wrote a post Lather, Rinse, Repeat about how I often get my best ideas in the shower (I think it’s something about turning your brain off) that allows the ideas to flow.

But I lamented the fact that I couldn’t find a place to write them down (all wet and soggy) when the inspiration struck.

Well know thanks to a BrandTwist reader I just found out that one company, Aqua Notes, offers a solution to this.

Rap Your Way to a Better Vocabulary

Posted by Julie | January 4th, 2010

Actually to all sorts of better learning.

That’s the premise behind these guys who started Flocabulary.

They use hip-hop to improve scores in vocabulary, reading, writing, math and social studies.

By engaging kids in a medium they think is cool, learning suddenly becomes fun.

And kids do seem to have an uncanny ability to memorize song lyrics (even when they have trouble memorizing basic times tables).

Check out this introductory video.

I think it’s a great idea with a lot of potential to help people (not just kids) remember all sorts of messaging.

Elf on the Shelf

Posted by Julie | December 21st, 2009

elfHave you heard about this newest Christmas sensation and budding tradition?

It’s called Elf on the Shelf.

I think it’s been around a few years, it seems to be really gaining momentum with parents this season.

My understanding is the Elf watches the children to see if they’ve been naughty or nice. Every night he returns to the North Pole. And every morning he re-appears at a different location in the child’s house.

This last bit is what I think is so clever. By a simple act of moving the Elf, he is then rendered interactive.

Not in the wii or Nintendo DS Way, but in a much simpler and perhaps more powerful way through a combination of parental love and effort and childhood imagination.

Steal This Chair, Please…The Results.

Posted by Julie | December 16th, 2009

A few weeks ago I wrote Steal this Chair, Please about an experiment by Blu Dot design and their agency Mono to see if people would “steal” chairs left on the streets of New York.

The results of the campaign were summarized yesterday in this interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal.

The purpose of the campaign was to put into practice Blu Dot’s philosophy of having great design reach as many people as possible.
