{"id":12796,"date":"2011-09-11T17:16:05","date_gmt":"2011-09-11T22:16:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/BrandTwist.com\/?p=2617"},"modified":"2018-10-18T20:14:19","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T20:14:19","slug":"does-sex-always-sell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brandtwist.com\/blog\/advertising\/does-sex-always-sell\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Sex (Always) Sell?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/brandtwist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/orangina-zebra-small-28130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2618 aligncenter\" alt=\"orangina-zebra-small-28130\" src=\"http:\/\/brandtwist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/orangina-zebra-small-28130-203x300.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m just back from a wonderful (dare I say \u201csensual\u201d) \u00a0vacation in the South of France.<\/p>\n<p>The weather was warm, the nights were long and, in general, our time was \u00a0spent in a relaxed languid and indulgent mode.<\/p>\n<p>Our days and nights were a continuous feast of fragrant, heady wine and mouth-watering \u00a0local delicacies: mussels fresh from the Mediterranean sauteed in garlic, ripe figs picked right from the local trees, creamy gelato in inspired flavors and crepes dripping with chocolate\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So with all this rampant hedonism, you think an advertising message using sex as it\u2019s theme would automatically hit a positive note, right?<\/p>\n<p>Well, um no.<\/p>\n<p>This Orangina ad was everywhere, using various wild animals in anatomically \u201cinteresting\u201d portrayals.<\/p>\n<p>And as much as my thirst was piqued by the 90 degree days\u2026these ads for the popular carbonated beverage, in my opinion, just fell flat (pun intended).<\/p>\n<p><!--more Keep reading \u00bb --><\/p>\n<p>I just don&#8217;t see what&#8217;s sexy about a zebra (or a giraffe or any of the other wild animals I saw in the ads). And I&#8217;m really not sure about the connection to the product.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the\u00a0line &#8220;naturally juicy&#8221; may be trying to create some connection between oranges and animals &#8211; both objects that are found in nature. ???<\/p>\n<p>But when\u00a0this line is juxtaposed with these clearly &#8220;unnaturally&#8221; enhanced illustrations, I find the whole thing a bit disturbing.<\/p>\n<p>True it\u00a0did\u00a0get my attention. But it it also had me reaching for a Perrier, or another suitable beverage alternative.<\/p>\n<p>Sex can often be a powerful tool in the advertising arsenal. But I think it&#8217;s best used in situations where there is some relevant connection between sex and the\u00a0product an\u00a0(ex. perfume, fashion, alcohol). Where using the product might make you feel more sexy\/desirable.<\/p>\n<p>I guess you could argue that in the languid summer heat, any thirst-quenching beverage can promise an element of sensual satisfaction&#8230;but the use of the animals in such a bizarre, over-sexualized way just confuses me.<\/p>\n<p>Am I missing something?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s my point of view.
