It was Wednesday around lunch time during a freak windstorm.<\/p>\n
Nobody was home, nobody was hurt.<\/p>\n
A tree fell on my house<\/p>\n
The evidence is there in full and impressive color.<\/p>\n
Yet I am still having trouble wrapping my head around this.<\/p>\n
A pretty typical sunny Wednesday (although a bit windy).<\/p>\n
An apparently healthy tree (according to the \u201ctree guy\u201d who eventually removed it).<\/p>\n
My daughter who is scared of storms has often worried that\u2019s such a thing would happen.<\/p>\n
After all we live in Westchester surrounded by trees.<\/p>\n
But we always brushed this off as an overactive imagination mixed with a flair for drama.<\/p>\n
Our typical response: \u201cdon\u2019t be silly, these trees won\u2019t fall.\u201d<\/p>\n
But one did.<\/p>\n
A tree fell on my house.<\/p>\n
How bizarre!<\/p>\n
After two days of reflection, here\u2019s what I\u2019ve been able to process so far:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A tree fell on my house:<\/p>\n
– The unexpected can and does happen.<\/p>\n
– You \u201cworst\u201d fear often turns out to be not so bad.<\/p>\n
Yes there\u2019s damage, and money involved, and insurance claims etc. but those are just inconveniences not tragedies.<\/p>\n
– People will usually rise to the occasion in trying circumstances<\/p>\n
In our case I am impressed by two people.<\/p>\n
Our neighbors (it\u2019s their tree) who have been kind, generous and concerned – even offering for us to sleep at their house.<\/p>\n
My daughter.<\/p>\n
Who did not (as I feared) have an anxiety attack. She actually took in surprisingly well.<\/p>\n
A bit shook up, but\u00a0 relatively OK and even excited to show the photo around school.<\/p>\n
My last lesson?<\/p>\n
– As much as we try to control everything in our hyper organized lives…<\/p>\n
…mother nature always\u00a0has the last laugh.<\/p>\n
A tree fell on my house.<\/p>\n
And it’s okay.<\/p>\n
